Manila's Best Available Chocolates

Jemps Gallegos is the biggest chocolate lover I know. (In terms of love, ok, not size.) She used to be with Ayala's commercial leasing group so it was part of her job to hunt down potential retailers, including food carts/restaurants, so she has been in the know on what's new and what's eww. For Menu's Gifts of Great Taste article I asked for her recommendations for chocolate gifts. She emailed me an essay within five minutes of my asking for suggestions! I had to print just the top three most available because of space limitations but here is her entire list, unedited.

Gosh, Margaux, I’ve got so much more to say but I’ve work to do! Hope this helps!

My all time favorite chocolates!

Baci: the Italian kisses with the mushy love quotes enclosed in the wrapper ala fortune cookie in five languages. Chopped hazelnuts in a chocolate ganache topped with a whole hazelnut, all enrobed in dark chocolate.

Lindt Lindor truffles: I haven’t seen these available locally probably because of our climate but OMG, these are amazing but oh-so-fragile. They do not travel well, so if a box gets to you intact, you owe the bringer bigtime! I prefer the dark variety wrapped in blue (the milk variety is wrapped in red, they’re ok, too). They’re delicate hollow chocolate casings only half filled with the smoothest chocolate ganache ever. Eat it at room temperature. Pop one in your mouth (it’s as big as a jackstone ball) and allow it to just surrender and collapse upon contact with your tongue. A seductively true melt-in-your-mouth experience.

Neuhaus: these are very aromatic pieces of Belgian made heaven! High end chocolates but super worth it! I like their Gianduja varieties best.

Leonidas: I also like their Gianduja varieties (pure almond & hazelnut praline), plus the dark pralines with soft caramel inside.

After Eight: these wafer thin dark chocolate mints are indeed perfect right after a tasty dinner. These should be available in certain candy stores but I don’t see them often, so when I do, I make sure to buy my stash. They’re made by Rowntree, but have already been bought by Nestle, I think.

Swedish chocolate discs: Amazingly huge disks (parang yung panutsa natin being sold in the buses: the peanut brittle kind) but of chocolate with whole pieces of whatever nut you fancy. These make me feel invincible and super happy!

Most accessible: these are the tried-and-true ones you can get in supermarkets or drugstores in an emergency!

Lindt 50% dark: the one in the classic white wrapper

Meiji Black: cheap and efficient, but surprisingly smooth and good!

Old Gold: by Cadbury, this is dark chocolate with roasted almonds

Toblerone: the black one if I want to reconnect with my lola who first introduced me to it; the usual beige one if I want to feel like a child again

Andes Mint: I like the dark mint dark version (the one wrapped in dark green), versus the crme de menthe which is the green brown green kind. this is a good substitute for After Eight. Available at Nuts about Candy or Candy Corner and in supermarkets.

Ritter Sport: made in Germany, they have a wild assortment from cornflakes to biscuit to raisin, yogurt, and all kinds of nuts. They’re square bars and quite substantial and filling.

hi, margaux! i always look forward to reading the sunday inquirer magazine for your features on menu. keep up the wonderful work!

i'm a chocoholic, too! i love baci, leonida's, meiji and ritter sport (i discovered it when i studied in germany for 14 months), among others. YUMMY!

may i also add to the list? the truffles and chocolate mendiants from bizu are also superb! for a much cheaper alternative to leonida's, there'a annie's belgian chocolates (made in angeles, pampanga but available at the 2nd level of market! market!). they're made with cocoa butter, like real belgian chocolates. they're pretty good. :-)

Congrats for your new blog, and a Blessed New Year to you! I always read your column in PDI. :)

I am not a chocoholic but I share the love for Perugina Baci, Lindt Lindor Truffles and Nehaus with your friend. By the way, Lindor Truffles are available in Shopwise, Rustan's and at the Duty Free Shops.

I used to love Baci (yes, including the cheesy love fortunes)...hmmm, I think it's time to go out and get some again :)

Valrhona for baking was available last time I was at Cook's Exchange (Rockwell). Valrhona for eating I saw before at Bacchus :)

I have pretty pedestrian taste buds when it comes to chocolates. =) I actually like the cheap-o chocolates from my childhood --- M&Ms, Kitkat, semi-sweet chocolate morsels (for baking), Cloud Nine, those little local chocolates with pinipig ...

wow, so many choco holics! jemps will be pleased!

like the marketman (hello, idol! thanks for the warm welcome!) - i've been having hard time getting into blogger and even gmail! but anyway ...

joy, pinoygourmand, joey, stef ... bow. you must be on the level of jemps. i cannot consider myself a chocolate connoisseur. HOT chocolate, i can go on and on about, yes. candies, no. i refer to jemps haha. like wysgal, i like grocery store goodies - ferrero, kitkat (there's a new hazelnut flavor!) and cadbury's fruit and nut. unlike wysgal, mas fan ako ng big bang, not so much cloud 9. =) and of course, there's always CHOC NUT!

tash ... everyday?! i need time to eat!

Ok, I thought I was the only one who still loved Cloud 9 and Big bang! Remember Manor House? That was my super fave but many don't remember it, and also the Stork caramel candy. Speaking of Kitkat, I tried the caramel filled one, ooh lala! Now, have to try the Hazelnut flavored Kitkats.

Interesting list. I love dark chocolate, the bitterer, the betterer. And Meiji is a great discovery too to satisfy the dark choco cravings when on a budget. I was searching for Serg's chocolates the other day; these are the chewy chocolate bars that don't melt. Went all the way to a little known grocery store in Rosario, Pasig to find them. But it seems that the product has disappeared from the face of the earth.

Yes, Serg's has disappeared. In college, our group had to do a PR video on them but we had a tough time trying to reach their management. On a deadline, we ambushed them with our huge-ass videocams and started taping their factory. We got caught by their security and were asked to delete the footage, but at least we finally got our interview. No free chocolate though (ya think??). The security head later slipped us his calling card; apparently, he teaches voice lessons, too (the odds!). So anyway, I digress: Serg's was I think the first confectionery factory in Asia. Their chocolates don't melt because it is heavily laden with extenders so it practically has no chocolate. :oP see how an expensive/high quality brand barely survives a second between your fingers? ;o)

Purchasing memory cards is such a time consuming process... You have to search online for prices, sort through which ones are legit, go out to a bunch of shops, compare prices, finally buy your memory, and then hope that the price doesn't fall in the next month or so.

I've been f'd over by some ridiculous price drops in the past... especially this one time when I bought a Micro SD card for my DS flashcard at what apparently was a bargain price, only to later see that it fell $5 in a week's time.

Hi Jingelbells! Here is my friend Jemp's comment on my Facebook page:

"Jemps Gallegos Yuvienco: hahaha, mems! oo, may stork caramel nga. miss ko na yun. pero durchbeiser (sp?) or durchbieber ata yung screen name nya noon. mas type ko yung riesen tho, chewy chocolate. mmmm!"

Hope this helps! At least you have a witness to its existence, haha! The post is public on Facebook.com/margauxsalcedo.
