The Old Magnolia House

Ventured with Nana Nadal, one of my fave eating buddies, to the old Magnolia House near New Manila. We are currently in search of the metro's best ice cream houses and we thought we'd start off the search with the original ice cream house, the one we used to go to as Grade School-ers, the Magnolia House on Aurora Boulevard.

Our date was at 3 pm Thursday. As I had just come from a press meet and a heavy lunch after I wasn't as excited to have ice cream as much as I was excited to see the old place (and Nana, whom I hadn't seen in a while).

As I entered the premises, I was quite disappointed to read in huge letters NESTLE. I am honestly not a big fan of Nestle ice cream, no matter how much I love Sharon Cuneta. And especially when Magnolia left the multinational to fend for itself, I think Nestle ice cream was just downhill from there.

Nevertheless, it was still comforting to see the place alive and still kicking. Really kicking. Nana observed that from the time she sat down, the table behind us had already had three turnovers. That was in a span of just two hours.

The menu is massive. The choices dizzying. When it's that dizzying I go for the most obvious to the eye or whatever the waiter highly recommends. There was a gigantic picture of a vanilla ice cream with chocolate bits so I got that - Vanilla Rocher Crunch. Picture screamed at me. Nana wanted cake and loves peanut butter so she went for the Reese's Choco Peanut Butter Cake.

We thoroughly enjoyed both. I honestly found both too sweet but smart girl Nana had ordered fries so di kami masyado naumay. The peanut butter cake was enjoyable if you dig in completely to get a taste of the peanut butter. Otherwise it's just vanilla ice cream cake. The Vanilla Rocher crunch is extremely enjoyable with the crunchies.

We also decided that our gauge will be the strawberry ice cream. Well, ok I decided. Because Nana preferred vanilla but I hate vanilla hehehe. Their strawberry ice cream was also extremely enjoyable. But I still prefer Magnolia's. I think Magnolia's is slightly creamier.

An hour and a half into our Nestle Creamery experience, sounds boomed and six waiters danced their way to a table to greet a guest happy birthday. They had Maneuvers dance moves (or what looked like) and all. Fun fun fun.

Somehow I don't find myself trekking all the way here again for an ice cream. But if I found myself in the area I don't think I would mind dropping by at all for a sugar high.

I live around the corner from both the Nestle ice cream factory and the Magnolia ice cream store, so whenever I get an ice cream urge, I go to Magnolia for a Brown Derby. I sort of feel no allegiance to Nestle, not to mention finding the new Nestle cafe too loud (the acoustics reverberate). Walked out the only time I went over there unable to hear myself think from the noise.
