There is no sincerer love than the love of food. -

Three weeks after the May 10 elections, with my candidate #2 (see section on No Protest from Estrada if you care to be updated with my other job), I am happy to find time to blog about food again.
I wasted no minute in getting back into the food scene since May 10. On the 11th, I visited the latest fine dining restaurant all the rave among the frou-frou, The Goose Station; on the 12th I attended a wine tasting preview at the Mandarin; on the 14th, I finally experienced the Terry's Selection that opened near Apartment 1B in Salcedo Village; on the 15th I indulged my dad in some hard core bulalo at Bakahan at Manukan and finally understood why this ugly restaurant on Roxas Boulevard is sought by even the wealthiest of men; on the 18th I indulged myself to my favorite Steak and Eggs at Mamou in Serendra; on the 23d I visited a restaurant I'd been hearing about, Romulo Cafe, whose feature was published in today's Sunday Inquirer; on the 27th I tried the most talked about steak of the moment, the Bistecca 122 at the newly opened Bistecca restaurant in Rockwell. Repeats done in between.
With all that eating, May flew by without a single post written. Only the resolution to get back to writing in June. So how cool is this that a food event at the Powerplant called Food Tour has just given me so much material.
The concept is a "tour" of the best of Filipino delicacies. Unlike the Baker's Dozen during Christmas where it's cupcakes and food gift ideas from all over, this time it's just everything Pinoy. But it is really a food trip!
Aside from Joyce's dulong, which I am horribly addicted to (more about that in a later post), there are new stalls: Sitsirya, which I had featured back in 2007, a great addition with their microwavable chicharon; Hecky's Cebu Style Lechon (I didn't try this) where you can get a few chopped pieces on a plate instead of having to buy an entire lechon for over P2,000 just for your lechon binge; and old timer Pasteleria Costa Brava offers an interesting Chocolate Leche Flan.
Most interesting is Carmela's. Like Connie's Kitchen, they have bottled viands to go. But instead of the now common gourmet tuyo, they offer bottled bacalao and a most interesting specialty particular to Bacolod called Pitaw, apparently a kind of bird.
The bacalao is satisfying. While I found it to be less salty (which is the preference of others), I would order this if I had to fool anyone about my cooking given limited time! It is beautifully ornamented with olives, carrots, the works!
The pitaw, on the other hand, was very intriguing. I had never tried this in my life. And even a search on the net will only provide one item on this delicacy and it was written by the passionate blogger Marketman. Unlike him, though, I had never tried pitaw or anything like it as a child, although I have always appreciated deep fried pigeon.
Thing is, I could not even find images of this bird on the net so I have been feeling quite uneasy having a visual in my head of eating something that looks like a maya. Yiii. But it tasted just like adobo flakes, reminding me of days at (another bird) Penguin Cafe in Malate; except that it was interesting to note that I was eating a "ricefield bird". (The picture here was just after we transferred the fried pitaw to a dish, with all its oil from the bottle. You are instructed to fry it to your desired crispiness.)
For dessert, I was happy to find a stall with more rice delicacies from Marilao, Bulacan. (Bulacan, represent!). Nana Meng's (which also has a stall here, but I'm sure sawa na kayo sa mga Nana Meng post ko!) has bibingka malagkit but this stall called Marilao Puto has a unique one called Bibingka Pinipig. Instead of the malagkit, its body is green!
They also have Suman Pinipig and the famous Marilao Puto, little puto balls that are not too sweet. There is kutsinta that comes in this ball form too!
This is a trip that you will definitely need more than a weekend for. Fortunately, the stalls will be here all weekends of June!
Food Trip.
