I don't know what spell was cast over me but was so inspired by my culinary experience at Japanese restaurant Wafu that I am writing this column not in prose but in haiku, a form of Japanese poetry that follows the syllabic pattern of 5-7-5 ...

Dining at Wafu
From fun to fine, east meets west
One of Greenhills' best
Wafu has several sections: a private dining
section with its own elevator upstairs, a teppanyaki section also
upstairs, lotus pods where groups can dine in semi-privacy on the
"bridge" leading to the stairs, the main dining area, a sushi bar, and
on weekends, an izakaya-themed outdoor setting.
They serve the entire range of Japanese cuisine from sushi and sashimi to ramen to grilled favorites, and the price range is also diverse, so you can scrimp or splurge. Most surprising on the menu was the offering of otoro, the most sought after tuna belly. I thought this was only available in Tsukiji, the Pasay Road favorite that costs an arm and a leg, so it was a real joy to find it available in Wafu, too.

I always passed this restaurant but ignored it, thinking it was some sort of franchise. What a pleasant surprise!
