Restaurants | Gloria Maris Greenhills

Gloria Maris is quite the restaurant institution in Greenhills.

A few years ago it expanded. Today it has two floors: the ground floor with 40 round tables for 8 and an adjoining area for hotpot with around 50 square tables of various sizes; the second floor holds 100 tables and welcomes wedding reservations and events, aside from the 13 rooms of various capacities.

The food remains to be upfront, reliable Chinese cooking. Although it does not taste as competitive as I remember it to be. Perhaps the competition just got better.

I used to rave about their hakaw but tasting it again at this new location, it seemed less outstanding and certainly not the best in the country, as I used to rave. This lechon kawali was also rather pleasant but neither would it merit a standing ovation.

The crispy taro duck, called a 'Winner' by a blogger I love, was an utter disappointment. It was not crispy, just ... sloppy.

This Rich Man's Rice tasted more like a poor man's rice ...

This abalone is obviously a far cry from the real thing although delicious in its own right. It's a creative savory dish of mushrooms and abalone.

There were two items on the menu though that I particularly liked: the winter melon soup, whose broth was utterly satisfying, and the stuffed pigeon, which is just spectacular. These two were excellent!

Service was terrible. The wait tests your patience. It took around 20 minutes before the person whom you could order from (not a waiter) arrived. This person is the lousiest guide and cannot answer any question on bestsellers. After we ordered, it took another half an hour to complete our orders, with a couple of orders missing. I got a mosquito bite. And when the room frees us, the draft from the air conditioner is quite strong.

The good news this September, though: if you pay with your Metrobank premier or world credit card, you get 50% off. That is a big deal. Our orders cost us P4000; imagine getting that for just P2,000. No wonder the place was full!!
