NOT ENOUGH CHOICES FOR THE TWO IMPORTANT Bs!

Two Bs of utmost importance are being ignored in this country: breakfast and beer. Coming back to Manila from Mindoro, I was craving a really great breakfast outside the hotel scene and wondered where I could go aside from Pancake House ... the choices are few:

Filling Station on Burgos is open 24/7, which is great, because they offer servings whose sizes remain true to their American Diner theme (read: huge). They offer a good eggs benedict and strong coffee. However, the location can be a problem. For one, there is no parking space. Then you will have to park all the way in Kalayaan and walk down the Red Light strip, which may not be cool for you if you're conscious about being seen in such an area (I really don't care where I'm seen as long as the food's worth it!)

I prefer going to Apartment 1B in Salcedo Village though (Sedeno between Valero and Leviste) because, aside from the easy parking, especially early in the morning, they have free wifi (yes!), a clean and quiet ambiance, and you can browse through the dailies they provide. They also serve a mean eggs benedict that I love.

Of course there's always Tapa King and Rufus for your good ol tapsilog.

In Boracay there's Real Coffee, which gives these humungous sized pancakes. And you must have Nadine's coffee with her calamansi cupcakes, they are the best!

There is also Lemon Cafe, which is to date my favorite breakfast place. Just visited again last week after two months of living in Mindoro to get my eggs benedict fix. It was worth the trip (thanks, JJ, for bringing me to Paul again!). I literally went to Bora, slept, had the eggs benedict at Lemon Cafe then slept again, and left the following day. I mean, seriously, who goes to Bora for the beach? Lol.

Another thing we desperately need in Manila is good beer. I did not drink beer the entire time I was in Mindoro because in the areas that I visited, which had no electricity, they would sell the beer unchilled. Warm beer. Not cool. So back in Makati, one of the first things I looked for was good dark beer. Unfortunately, not only do we have a dearth of good imported beer, you can't even find Cerveza Negra in most restaurants even in Makati. So huge kudos to Grappa's, the rare restaurant that offers draught beer, and Beer Paradise where Chimay and a couple of other monk trappist beers are available!

With all the space provided by the developers now - Trinoma, Serendra, etc - I do hope more choices on these two Bs come soon!

The 2 Bs = Beer and Breakfast ... I love it!

Agree with you that Grappa's and Beers Paradise are the best places to get beer in Manila. =)

Hi, I would like to try Filling Station in P. Burgos since I am always looking for 24/7 restos. Just want to know if the crowd there late at night is ok since its in the red light district? Thanks!

tash i been in mindoro it was great to chat with you over ym. how is canada? sawa ka na sa salmon? from NORWEGIA? wahaha. get it - norwegian salmon from norwegia daw lol

anonymous, the first time i was there was on a weekday around 11 pm and the place had a few girls playing billiards with a couple of white guys. don't worry they were fully dressed and won't bother you - at least they didn't bother me or the boys i was with - and we were with a michael de mesa lookalike - uber tisoy. the second and third times were on weekends although much earlier coz it was for dinner - place was empty until around 11ish. my personal policy is to treat it like any other restaurant except the crowd gets a little more um exotic and foreign past 11. but don't worry it won't get sleazy or anything if that's what you're worried about - remember some of them are working haha.

about the billiards - my friend vanni explained the great play they have here. i myself don't play billiards but their system allows a great way to meet people. you have a sign up sheet and winner challenges whoever is next in line. i don't know if this is how it operates as well in other billiards places. that never was my game ... and besides i just go there for the eggs benedict and chilli fries ... and the adorable 50s set up.
