We showed our respects for the Lady of Manaoag yesterday and took a four hour drive up north. On the way back we had a very late lunch at a small restaurant called MATUTINA's that has these AMAZING CRABS! You have a choice between buttered and chili crabs. We opted for buttered, as recommended by the waiter. It is one of the best crab dishes I have tasted in my life and unlike any I have tried in Manila! It is dripping in a kind of chili-butter sauce. You need to crack it open, of course, but the meat of the crab is already dripping in this chili-butter concoction. Absolutely yum.
Also good although overstaged by the crab were the sinigangs and kilawins. They have around five variations of each. The variations of sinigang, though, are not about the mix, i.e. bayabas (guava) or sampalok (tamarind), but about the meat content, i.e., bangus and other variations of fish. I was curious as to a fish called MALAGA, so we tried that. It is a white and flat fish which had very soft, delicious meat, perfect for sinigang. We also had the seafood kilawin, which is a mix of all the seafood choices, i.e., fish, squid, shrimp. It was regular kilawin, good to start with. But again, the crabs stole the show.
