Cafe Ano on Saturday Afternoon

The trip was for Kanin Club, actually, but I woke up late and we didn't make the lunch cut off time. So our choices were confined to those open at 3 p.m. for a very late lunch. Fortunately, there was Cafe Ano, the former Cafe Adriatico at the far end of the curb, across Melo's, in Westgate.

It was a great discovery too. Apparently Adriatico had given it up but some of the owners decided to stay on and so did the chef (was too lazy - it was a Saturday - to take down notes so his name escapes me now). Adriatico staples like Chicken a la King, which Dr. Bad always orders at Adriatico, are no longer on the menu, but other Filipino specialties, like the tsokolate with ensaimada, remain. Also, they have created a few Ano specialties, like a Yemenese oxtail stew, which I tried. This was a little weird - like a slightly spicy kare kare. I couldn't help but look for bagoong but Dr. Bad pointed out that Hello, It's not Kare kare!

I also especially liked the bamboo rice, pictured here. And their sisig is quite tasty too.

Cafe Año
Westgate Center, Alabang
(No reservations required. Happy hour cocktails. Lovely Alabang air. Major credit cards accepted. Expect to see Alabang ladies who lunch during merienda.)

Cafe Ano? Love the name! Westgate seems a bit too far off for a casual day trip though.

Hi Margaux. Love the name. Since coming back from vacation, I have been craving for pinoy food in all forms. Thanks for this.

The bamboo rice reminds me of the one I always order in Abe. Do they taste the same?
